A pierce to remember

wheel bug on the wall

This prehistoric-looking creature is a wheel bug. No idea what it was doing out and about in November. Among its favored prey is a near relative, the odious (and odiferous) stink bug, so leave ’em alone if you find one hanging about! However, they have a proboscis which, though generally used to pierce their prey, can also deliver a nasty stab to curious humans, memorably and variously described by those who have suffered the experience as “worse than a hornet’s sting,” “worse than childbirth,” and “worse than being shot.” I wrote about wheel bugs in Virginia Living.
